Annual Fishing Tournament

You can compete for prizes. All you need is a State of Illinois fishing license. That ain’t bad for catching a Coho and King Salmon, Steelhead, Perch, Catfish, Carp, or Panfish. Fish caught from Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, Wolf Lake, and Chicago Park lagoons all qualify.

Perch Fishing Derby

Oh yeah! This is a fish worth spending the time and effort to learn to catch, and these are two of the best springtime places to find them. Prizes, fun, and a chance to learn some of the many methods used to catch Perca flavascens. Perch caught in this contest are also eligible to be registered in the Richard J. Daley Memorial Fishing Tournament for June.

You may fish in either location.

Great for Perch: Deep diving crankbaits (silver and black, fire tiger) In-line spinners with silver or gold blades Mini-mites with maggots 2 – 3 inch tubes or minnow plastics (white, chartreuse)

Carp Fishing Derby

The Chicago River is home to both a lot of carp and a lot of monster carp! This downtown section of the Chicago River (between Columbus and Lake Shore Drive) is a great carp fishing location.

Open to the public, no fees, no pegs – simply sign in and find your spot. Move around if you wish. First, second, and third place prizes for adults and Zebco 33 Rod & Reel combos for first – third place kids (age 15 and under).

Northerly Island Salmon Classic Derby

Sponsored by Henry’s Sports and Bait, Inc. and Fish`N Kids.

The view at night of downtown Chicago from Northerly Island can be unbelievable. As for tactics, go with what you know: spoons, plugs, bait. No pegs – it’s an open derby. Grab a spot and start fishing. There are both adult and youth categories, plus a raffle. As usual, it’s free to register.

As of this writing the Chicago Bears and the Charter One Pavilion Music schedules have not been set, so this date could shift.

Youth Fishing Derby

1,000 Zebco 33 combos were donated to the program by The Cullerton Company, Zebco Rods and Reels, and Chicago Park District.

They have been given to kids from Lincoln Park Summer Camp.
